This course is an introduction to news writing for newspapers and other print media including the techniques of news gathering, reporting, and interviewing. Emphasis is placed on basic methods of gathering information, conducting interviews, organizing a story, writing leads, writing clear, concise copy, and upon developing research skills. It also presents a study of journalistic news, feature, and sports writing. Emphasis is placed on basic news writing techniques and on related legal and ethical issues. Upon completion, students should be able to gather, write, and edit news, feature, and articles.
This course is a basic introduction to acting technique for the stage. It is designed to develop the ability to play dramatic action honestly and believably, using realistic/naturalistic material as well as self-scripted autobiographical writing. Course work includes exercises and improvisations exploring awareness, relaxation, observation, the senses, voice, and physical and emotional life. Work in preparation of the monologue will be introduced. Scene work, in the second half of the term, will focus on breaking down the play, analysis, identity, motivation and action. Out-of-class assignments include required readings from acting texts and plays. Attendance at, as well as responses to, a number of stage productions scheduled during the term is required.
This course provides students with technical skills in camera operation, shooting techniques and digital technology. Students must complete a variety of assignments, including a final project, which require them to conceptualize, write, plan, edit and produce video compositions. Foundation courses include: production preparation, art direction, documentary filmmaking and theoretical principles.
